Sydney's transport system is modern, fast and reasonably reliable (unless your in a hurry for a train and well... try for yourself!). You can get to most places on public transport for very little money. Most travel and timetable information can be accessed by calling the Sydney Transport Infoline on 131 500.
Trains
CityRail is Sydney's metropolitain rail service. It operates between 4.30am and midnight every day. City travel can be done easily on the City Circle line, and this will link you up with many of the cities top attractions. To access Oxford Street, just alight at Museum Station, for the ferries and Opera House, jump off at Circular Quay. Tickets for this service are available from easy to use ticket machines, located at all major stations, and you can travel around the city for as little as $2. The City Circle service easily links up to outer metro and country/interstate services, to make your trip seamless and easy. Make sure you keep up to date on daily timetable changes though. Security Guards travel on Night-time trains and all stations have security camera monitoring.

Ferries
Sydney Ferries are a unique and enjoyable service... many locals use the ferries daily to get to and from work or social engagements, but they are just as fun to take a quick sightseeing trip!
The ferries operate seven days a week and service all ports of the harbour, including up the Paramatta River... why not grab a bite to eat on the Corso at Manly, head out to Paramatta to experience suburban Sydney, or hop over to Nudist Beaches and Seafood restaurants at Watsons Bay.
Buses
The fun thing about Sydney Buses is trying not to get hit in the head by one as they head down the street... always stand a foot back from the curb, as they can come mightily close! Playing chicken aside... Sydney Buses operate on an extensive network throughout all parts of the city and are a great, cheap way to get around.
Water Taxi's
Not for the faint-hearted, or the budget conscious, Water Taxis are a uniqely Sydney thing. If you are late to board that dance party cruise, or want to travel around the timetable, then you can grab a water taxi at most jetties on the harbour... most common pick up spots are at Circular Quay (near the Museum of Contemporary Art) or Darling Harbour.
Taxi Cabs
Hail one anywhere, on any street corner, or at any of the cities pre-designated Taxi Ranks. Sydney cabs are a force unto their own, but dont try and get one at 3am/pm as it is change over time and you've got buckleys of hitching a ride! Sydney Cabs are subject to strict operational standards, so if your cab driver does not have his/her licence on display, then dont take the trip with them... get another one who does. Pricing and useage guidelines should be displayed in the cab where you can see them, and will tell you how you can handle your trip without getting ripped off, or annoying the driver.
Lightrail/Tram
The Metro Lightrail operates slick modern trams along a CBD line, which heads from Central Rail station, through the CBD, China Town, Darling Harbour, Star City Casino and all the way out to Lilyfield. A fun trip, and the best way to get to the Casino.
Tram info can be gained by calling (02) 8584 5288
Monorail
Unlike in the Simpsons, Sydney's monorail is a huge success story. An eight stop loop throughout the Sydney Central Business District, the Monorail takes in all the areas that you would want to see, from Darling Harbour, to Pitt Street Mall for shopping. the Monorail has services leaving each stop every 3-5 minutes, and you can either grab yourself a day pass or just go for a single ticket ride. Lots of fun, with great views of the city.
Airport Connections
Sydneys domestic and international airports are located in the same area, and there are several ways of getting to and from it. You can catch an Airport Express Bus, which are coloured green and gold (#300) from Central, Town Hall, City Centre, Wynyard, Kings Cross, Oxford Street and Circular Quay... or you can jump on the new Airport Link Train from Central station, both of which deliver you right to the doors.
Bus Tours
A great way to see Sydney is by one of the many bus tours around town. There are privately owned operators, including our friends at Tour Sydney - that operate the ³Sydney by Diva² tours... which are a hoot, plus day tours and ones operated by the State Transit Authority. You can grab a ticket for around twenty bucks, and see sights on the Bondi and Bay Explorer - a blue bus that has a set route... or thry the red sights of sydney bus, that also has a set route... the good thing about these services is that you can buy a ticket and hop on and off all day at each point and take as long as you want. The bus service is frequent, and you can control what you see and for how long. They take in most of the major sights and spots, so it's good value.
We recommend that should you want a comfort experience and want to see the tourist AND the local side, go with a tour operator like Tour Sydney, as they are cost effective and you know you will get a quality service.
