Tasmanian ALP reaffirms marriage equality support

The Australian Labor Party (ALP) Tasmanian conference this past weekend reaffirmed its support for same-sex marriage law reform rejecting civil unions as an alternative option while conference delegates also supported a motion calling for Tasmanian same-sex couples to be allowed to adopt children.

“This is the second time Tasmanian Labor has endorsed marriage equality which highlights just how out-of-step Julia Gillard is with Labor rank and file,” Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesperson Rodney Croome said.

Tasmania’s ALP state conference in 2009 was the first state/territory to announce its support for same-sex marriage in 2009. Tasmania is the first and only state to legally recognise same sex marriages performed overseas.

Interestingly, nearly all of the state and territories ALP branches are coming out in support of Equal Marriage, making it harder for the Prime Minister to ignore the will of the majority of Australians.
