Tasmania, the island state in Australia has made history today with it's House of Assembly giving the green light to Equal Marriage Rights.
It is the first time an Australian parliament has voted in favor of marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples, in line with their straight counterparts.
The Greens motion also called on the Federal Government to change the Marriage Act. Which is widely reported that the leading Labor party will debate and hopefully decide their policy position at their December conference in Sydney.
Debate on the motion was watched by local and interstate same-sex marriage activists in the public gallery and by a large national audience on the parliament's internet broadcast - with facebook, twitter and GTG's social network a buzz about the proceedings.
The results were 12 for and 9 against, The Labor Party backed the motion while the Liberal Party voted against it.
A huge congratulations to all our community members who fought for their rights in Tasmania and across Australia.
