Marriage equality advocates have welcomed a motion passed today at the national conference of Young Labor supporting the right of adult Australians to marry the adult partner of their choice.
Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said the motion will send a strong message to the Labor Party National Conference about the high level of support for marriage equality among young Australians.
“According to national polls, 80% of young people support marriage equality”, Mr Greenwich said.
“The Young Labor motion is a timely reminder to the Labor Party as a whole that it must support this issue if it wants to connect with younger voters.”
The Young Labor conference has endorsed a motion calling on the ALP’s December National Conference to support an amendment to the Marriage Act which allows all adult Australians to marry the person of their choice.
Young Labor national president, Matt Dixon, said one of the highlights of the debate was the strong support from young heterosexual delegates from rural and regional Queensland and Victoria.
A Galaxy Research poll conducted in October 2010 found that 80% of Australians aged 18 to 24 believe same-sex couples should be allowed to marry while the reform had 78% support among those aged 25 to 34.
