"Stop Knocking Oxford Street!"

I've been prompted to write after reading too many articles about how diverse and vibrant the inner west is & how dreadful Darlinghurst is.

While King Street was once the poor relation of Oxford Street, it is now a strong & diverse area with booming businesses. Darlinghurst now needs support, and constant talk only of the 'flagging fortunes' of the main street isn't helping. There is a wide range of shops struggling on ‘The Strip’.... Clothing, Household goods, deli's, record stores, book shops, cafes, restaurants; and all still open!

A related problem is the stereotypical depiction of the clientele of the Darlinghurst venues; there is a clear impression in the media that they are predominantly white Anglo Gym Queens, but this simply doesn't hold up to closer examination. Take a look at ALL the venues and the people there (or just the photos in this paper), not just the two big clubs.

While the gym queen tribes (amongst others) can be found at Arq & The Shift; look instead (for example) at Stonewall, Palms, The Oxford, Shift bar, Slide, Odyssey, Manacle, Phoenix. You’ll find everyone from twinks to Daddies, Muscle Queens to Lipstick Lesbians, Teenage students to middle aged bears & skinheads. Is this Homonormative? Well good on us for creating a norm that is so diverse it defies definition!

We have to be careful about what we say in the media or stereotypes become self fulfilling. Yes, Newtown has a great diversity and deserves to be supported, but it has just a handful of gay/lesbian venues. Darlinghurst has around 15 with such a variety that you're sure to find one to suit.

Please don't demonise the Ghetto; if we want to keep both Newtown and Darlinghurst as part of our Fabulous turf then we've got to support them both. Head out to the Golden Mile; grab some shopping, get a coffee & watch the bois & grrls stroll by.
